Special Guest KC Klein and DARK FUTURE
Wednesday, October 26th, 2011

Hi everyone (waving madly from AZ)! I first want to shout out a huge thank-you to Juliana for letting me come on her blog and squeal about my new release, DARK FUTURE! Also, Juliana was so kind to allow me to hold a contest on her blog. Soooo here’s the 4-1-1. (Do people even say that anymore?) For a chance to win a free copy of my new release from Avon all you have to do is post my cover on your blog, bonus points if you can sneak the blurb in, and link it back to Juliana’s site here. But what if you don’t have a blog, you ask. Alright, alright…I’ll even make it easier. How about a post on your Facebook page or a tweet on twitter? Is that easy enough?

I’ll keep the contest running until Friday October 28th!

For the past week I’ve had the privilege of hopping around to different blogs and talking about my book, DARK FUTURE. Well, that’s great and all (because who doesn’t like to talk about themselves and their latest obsession?), but I am feeling a bit long-winded so I would love to open the comments up to readers. Ask me a question (and dare I say it, ANY question), and I will do my best to answer.

With that being said, let me tell you about DARK FUTURE. I started writing this book in the black pit of post-partum depression after my eldest daughter was born. Now, of course, she is a well-adjusted, loving, kind, nine-year-old, but back then she was the child from hell. I needed an escape. Reading was out of the question because it’s hard to hold a book while carrying a screaming baby. But I could still escape by writing a story in my head.

Through the years I kept plugging away on my manuscript. Then a funny thing happened—my characters started to take shape, become more alive, more…crazy? But I thought, who cares? This is my first book. When I am done writing it, I’ll find a nice place for it under my bed. DARK FUTURE will never get published.

Fast forward nine years, and low and behold, I found not only an agent, but an editor who liked and got my snarky, twisted, dark sense of humor. Who woulda thunk it. I guess today’s lesson is…be careful what you write because one day your mom just might end up I can’t wait to hear from all of you, and I’ll be checking back throughout the day to see what questions your devious minds plan to torture me with.
Thank you everyone!

Awakened in the middle of the night by a future version of herself, Kris Davenport is given a mission: go forward in time to save the world—and His life. Of course, her future self doesn’t tell her who he is, just sends her into an abyss and straight into an alien invasion.
He turns out to be ConRad Smith, the callous, untrusting Commander of Earth’s army and the world’s last defense. There’s only one way to know for sure if this strange woman is an alien spy—slice her throat. Except, he didn’t anticipate the heat he would feel as he interrogates the hot-tempered, warm-blooded woman. For a man whose sole focus has been survival, she’s more temptation than he can handle. But a world on the brink of destruction leaves no room for love…and time is running out.

All right, so happy to have KC Klein pop by! If you want to know more about KC and her books, check out her website HERE. As I write this post there’s a manuscript sitting on my hard drive, waiting for my attention. It came from my editor and includes some requested rewrites for my new release this spring, Cria. I’m trying to ignore it, but it’s hard. The document sits on my desktop, the little shortcut icon taunting me with its high priority. I’ve opened the word file numerous times over the past week and stared at the comments like a deer in headlights. I understand what the editor wants. I even agree that it would make the story stronger. Yet… nothing.

What’s wrong with me? As I was drafting this story, the words flowed freely. I was on a high. Diego and Aleta were real, more real than some people I interact with on a daily basis. I loved them, they loved me. Life was good.

Then something happened between my letter of acceptance and the edits — something big. I lost my mojo. My drive. My inspiration. Anything and everything is distracting me, and I can’t seem to focus on what I need to do.

Maybe part of my problem is that these edits are more difficult than ones I received on previous manuscripts. It requires a fair amount of rewriting and digging deeper into the story and its characters. For some reason, I just can’t do it, no matter how hard I force it.

Aha! ~ Maybe there’s the problem. I’m forcing it. Maybe taking a little break will help get me back on track. So yesterday I closed the document and saved it on my hard drive. I’m trying to focus on something else, but it’s still calling to me, whispering that my deadline is fast approaching. Time is running out and I feel no closer to my goal than I did a week ago. What’s a girl to do?

I did what any self-respecting writer would do: complained to my author friends. My critique partners came up with some wonderful suggestions and I’ve included them here in case some are struggling like I am. Although they were speaking about writing, I think these ideas could be to anyone who seems to have hit a mental road block.

Look at what you are doing. Maybe there is a reason why the enthusiasm
isn’t there. Sometimes making small changes can take you in a whole
new direction.

Watch or read something special to you. Often seeing what others
created leaves you with the feeling of ā€˜I want to do that.’

Surround yourself with people who have the same goals. After a
writer’s meeting I often get an extra boost of motivation.

Try something a little out of your comfort zone. Sometimes working
outside the box can give you the extra inspiration you need.
~ Grace Conley

Sometimes life can get in the way of inspiration. Journaling through difficult times can help declutter your mind and refocus your thoughts.
~ Amanda Vyne

Grab your ipod (or other music device) and head out for a walk. Fresh air and good music can help set the mood and often gives me a creative boost.
~ Elle Ricci

Allow yourself to do something that isn’t scheduled. Sometimes giving yourself permission to try something new can help with creativity.
~ Dara Snow

We might not all be writers, but we all experience times when we feel unmotivated. So my question today is… how do you find your motivation (or inspiration)? One lucky commenter will receive a $10 Loose-Id gift certificate. The winner will be drawn on Friday, January 29th and announced in the comments section of this post — so be sure to check back to see if you won!

Blurb for ā€œUp on the Housetopā€:

Desperate to escape her controlling family, Chloe Bradford scrambles up to the housetop of her Texas home on Christmas Eve. There she discovers a sexy stranger cloaked in shadow. He convinces her to shed her good-girl image and give into her most secret desires. The man’s low, raspy voice tugs at her memory as much as it awakens her passion. Is he a Christmas miracle, or some figment of her imagination? When he tries to leave, she follows him, eager to learn his identity.

Zach can’t stop thinking about Chloe, or their reunion on the roof. His wolf-half urges him to reveal his identity and claim her, but he doesn’t dare. For both their sakes, he must remain in the shadows until he can control his inner beast’s bursts of rage. After a decade of struggle he thought he could handle his curse, but Chloe’s presence causes his control to slip. As the moon-rages become more frequent, he knows he’s slipping toward the insanity that claims many of his kind. Only Chloe can save him, but will she want to after he reveals his identity and the reason he broke her heart over a decade ago?

Please welcome the lovely and talented Amanda Vyne to my blog.

So, the talented and wickedly awesome Juliana Stone invited me to be the first evah guest blogger. Brave lady. I promise to behave. Mostly.

Okay, so it started with a fantasy. Seriously, who doesn’t fantasize about all the great dream candy that litters our screens…computer, television or any other? I know I wouldn’t turn away Eric Northman if he followed me to bed to nibble on my neck after an episode of True Blood. Or how about some Castiel magically appearing on your headboard as you cuddle down for some Supernatural? I don’t know about you, but I would never kick a sexy archangel out of bed for eating crackers. So when Gabrial Ferrar, the main man in my upcoming release More Than Blood, first joined in on the chaotic insanity that is my imagination I did not turn him away. Besides…he was hawt. At the time he looked just like Brad Pitt in Troy. Hawt, right?

The only problem was Gabrial was a stick in the mud, mired down with rules and laws and pure blood tradition. All that sexiness was going to waste. He needed someone that defied every law, every rule and was about as far from a pure blood as she could be. Enter Kel. A crossbreed with a rough start, a foul mouth and high kick that defied physics. She rocked his world right from the first taste of her blood. Did I mention she blames his father for dumping her on the street? Or that he’s forbidden from forming a blood bond to a crossbreed? Add a smoking hot attraction (which ends up over the hood of a sports car) and a dead crossbreed girl (who looks strangely like a younger Kel) and you have one hot read. Don’t believe me? Watch this book trailer. Still not convinced…visit my website for an excerpt and a chance to win a free copy. www.AmandaVyne.com

Who knows what fantasies of your own it might kick start.
